I watched Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo back in mid-2020, and now, nearly five years later, I’m revisiting it with mixed feelings. This Telugu family drama, directed by Trivikram Srinivas, boasts all the ingredients of a blockbuster—charisma, grandeur, and Allu Arjun’s magnetic presence. However, it’s not without its flaws.

Review
On the positive side, the movie is visually stunning. The lavish production design and vibrant cinematography create a dreamlike atmosphere that immerses you in the world of luxury and drama. Allu Arjun, in particular, is the film’s beating heart. His energy, comedic timing, and suave persona shine throughout, especially in his stylish action sequences and dance numbers. Songs like "Butta Bomma" and "Ramuloo Ramulaa" are infectious, and Thaman S’s music elevates the film to another level. Tabu, as the dignified yet complex family matriarch, adds a touch of elegance and gravitas to the narrative. The emotional beats of the story work well in parts. Themes of familial love, identity, and self-worth are explored with sincerity. Some scenes, especially in the second half, tug at your heartstrings and are bound to connect with audiences who enjoy drama with a touch of melodrama.
However, the film falters in its predictability. The “switched at birth” trope is not new to Indian cinema, and while the screenplay tries to add flair to the narrative, it lacks fresh twists to keep you truly hooked. The runtime also feels excessive, with certain subplots dragging the pace. Some comedic moments and secondary characters, though intended for humor, feel forced and take away from the emotional depth.
Additionally, while Pooja Hegde’s presence adds glamour, her character is underwritten and doesn’t leave much of an impression beyond the romantic angle. The film leans heavily on Allu Arjun’s star power, and while he carries it effortlessly, a stronger ensemble narrative could have made the story more balanced.
In summary, Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo is a mix of dazzling highs and clichéd lows. It’s a treat for fans of Allu Arjun and those who enjoy larger-than-life storytelling, but it doesn’t fully escape the traps of formulaic cinema. Worth a watch for its charm, music, and grand presentation, but don’t go in expecting groundbreaking storytelling.
